(28:2-3) You shall make holy garments for your brother Aaron, for honor and glory. And you shall speak to all the wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, and they shall make Aaron's garments to sanctify him, [so] that he serve Me [as a kohen].
Why is there a commandment to Moshe and a separate command
to the tailors? Why the switch in
language from holy garments to Aharon’s garments? The Ben Eish Chai explains that pre-eating
from the Tree of Knowledge the body itself was cloaked in holiness and there was
no need for garments. It is only after
the sin that the holiness vanished and there is a need for physical garments. The first command is for Moshe to infuse
Aharon with the spiritual garments. That
is why it’s called the holy garments.
Only after that is there a commandment to make the physical garments.
The physical garments are meant to be a reflection of the purity of mind and soul the kohan must have in order to do the avodah.
