Moshe The Leader

The Midrash (beginning of Vayikra and other places) says that Moshe Rabbenu had 10 names.  Yet, the name that he is referred to by in the Torah is the name given to him by Batyeh, the daughter of Pharaoh, why?  Many interpretations are given.  The Sforno says: ותקרא שמו משה – ממלט ומושה את אחרים מצרה. ותאמר כי מן המים משיתהו – הטעם שקראתיו ׳משה׳ להורות שימלט את אחרים הוא, כי אמנם משיתיהו מן המים אחר שהיה מוטל בתוכם. וזה לא היה כי אם בגזרת עירין (ע״פ דניאל ד׳:י״ד), כדי שימלט הוא את אחרים.  In other words, Moshe is defined as one who redeems others.  That is the job of Moshe, to lead Klal Yisroel though the process of redemption and therefore that is the name that defines him.
This blog mentioned in the past the Alter Rebbe's peshat in איכה, that Hashem asked Adam, where is he holding in life and so too Hashem asks this of every individual.  Rabbi Herbert Weiner in 9 1/2 Mystics recounts that in a private audience with the Rebbe he asked if the Rebbe ever asks איכה of himself.  The Rebbe responded that his answer to that question would depend upon Weiner himself.  For as a leader of people the answer to his own איכה is how his followers are doing.
Some people are meant to perfect themselves and are defined by their own accomplishments but others are defined as leaders and defined by the accomplishments of their followers.  This is the meaning of Rashi (based upon Berachot 32a) in Ke Sesa (32:7) לך רד – מגדולתך, לא נתתי לך גדולה אלא בשבילם.
Based upon this we can explain the Gemorah in Berachot (28b) that רבי יוחנן בן זכאי was unsure if he was going to heaven or hell.  Everyone asks how could the great רבי יוחנן בן זכאי be unsure which way he was going to take?  Possibly רבי יוחנן בן זכאי of course knew he was a great tzaddik however what he wasn't sure about was where the nation who's leadership he assumed was holding.  Living through the dark and turbulent times of the churban haBais it wasn't clear if the nation was heading on a path of destruction or rebuilding.  This would be the judgement of רבי יוחנן בן זכאי, not of his accomplishments, rather if his leadership was successful.
