Make It Count

Why was it necessary to have a count of Klal Yisrael after the episode of Pinchas?  The Sfas Emes (5646) says that the count at beginning of Bamidbar was a count for the acceptance of Torah and the count in here is to enter Eretz Yisrael.  He says the point of the count is to attach one to their source, וכל המנינים שבתורה הוא להעמיד לכל א' בשורשו וז"ש לחנוך משפחת החנוכי כו' פי' לחנוך שלמטה נמשך משפחת החנוכי הידועה שהוא שורש השייך לו. וז"ש חז"ל שזה השם מעיד עליהם. פי' שיש להם התדבקות בעולם הנעלם שזה השם רומז על זה  

The Sfas Emes (5645) adds  כי מתנת א"י העיקר בשורש העליון שיש לכל בנ"י חלק בשורש א"י למעלה ולמטה. ולכן המנין שהי' קודם כניסתם לארץ ישראל להעמיד כל אחד על שורשו כמו שהי' המנין מקודם.  A count occurs when Klal Yisrael's essence needs to be attached to their source which is necessary when the essence of Klal Yisrael is to be revealed.
