Today

Rav Mendel Futofast once asked at a frabragen what is the most important point of a person's life.  After the answers were collected, he banged on the table and said, the answer is now! Right now, the most important moment is the present and what one does with it.
The haftorah this week is the beginning of Ch. 2 in Sefer Melachim. What does it mean that Dovid told this to Shlomo לאמר, who is Shlomo supposed to tell this to, its a message for himself?  the Alshich explains that Dovid told Shlomo to constantly tell himself אָנֹכִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ.  To remind himself that he is constantly coming closer to his final day and there is no time to waste.
The possuk at the beginning of this week's parsha says Why does it say וַיְהִ֤י יְמֵי־יַֽעֲקֹב֙ שְׁנֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו, just say ויהי חיי יעקב, why the double terminology of  יְמֵי־יַֽעֲקֹב֙ שְׁנֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו?    In Sefer Likuttim from Arizal it explains that the years of Yaakov were considered days.  He didn't view a year as a year, rather as a unit of 354 days in which each day is important and one must accomplish in it.
Why does the possuk say בַּיּ֣וֹם הַהוּא֘, obviously it was that day?  The Teferes Shmuel (Alexander) says the beracha was If Epraim and Menashe will constantly tell themselves that today may be our final day.  If they act in such a manner, then Klal Yisroel will wish their children to follow that path and bless their children to be like them.  It is the appreciation that every day, every minute is important that would be Yaakov's inheritance to his grandchildren. New Cycle Daf Yomi And Vayechi

This week the world started a new cycle of daf yomi.  The first Mishna in Shas opens with the mitzvah of krias shema.  Why does it open with this mitzvah specifically?  The Mishna in Avos (2:1) says The Arizal (Likutay Hashas) and Megaleh Amukos Vaeschanan say that Rebbi uses precisely the terminology of תפארת for he was a continuation of the soul of Yaakov Avenu, who's middah is תפארת.  The midrash in this week's parsha (96:5) says about Rebbi Based upon the above words we understand why Rebbi is connected with Yaakov Avenu.  Rashi at the beginning of Toldos says כְּתִיב; אֵלּוּ אַנְטוֹנִינוּס וְרַבִּי, שֶׁלֹּא פָסְקוּ מֵעַל שֻׁלְחָנָם לֹא צְנוֹן וְלֹא חֲזֶרֶת לֹא בִימוֹת הַחַמָּה וְלֹא בִימוֹת הַגְּשָׁמִים (עבודה זרה י"א):  Why are these two souls hinted to at the beginning of Toldot?  Now we understand that Rebbi and Antenenus are Yaakov and Esav in another form.

Says the Ben Yehoyuda, that's why the first mishna talks about krias shema.  The midrash in this weeks parsha (98:3) says Since it is from Yaakov Avenu that we merit the mitzvah of shema, therefore, Rebbi, the nitzut of Yaakov Avenu, starts the first mishna about krias shema.

The Baal Haturim at the beginning of the parsha says the best years of Yaakov's life were the years in Egypt, Why were these years his best years?  The Daas Zekanim last week's parsha (47:8) says Based upon this we understand that Yaakov would've immediately done teshuva for his "sin" and hence spend the rest of the years of his life working on his simcha and feeling at ease with life.  Hence, these years were the best years of his life.  This is the message of שמע ישראל.  Yaakov wanted to reveal the end.  He wished to give over the secrets of life, but it was hidden.  The dark clouds of golus didn't permit a clear vision.  Yet, despite the unclear future we are still able to say ה' אחד.  Based upon this we understand why Berachos opens with the night time krias shema first for it is the message of krias shema that carries us through the long bitter golus.  It the krias shema that allows us to write and study a Talmud Bavli in golus.  Inside the Eretz Mitzraim, the מיצרים of golus, there is an experience of ויחי יעקב.  As the Yismach Yisroel explains ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים, it is Yaakov that gives us the capability to live (true living,) in the מיצרים that threaten to swallow us.

In the words of the Toldos Yaakov Yosef in the beginning of the parsha:

Effect The World

The possuk says Yaakov lived in Eretz Mitzraim, it should have said he lived in Goshen for he didn't live in the entire Egypt?  Says the Meshech Chachma: Yaakov physically lived in one place but his effect was felt in the entire world.  As Rav Kook puts it in Yaakov sang the shirah of the world.

The Gemorah in Sotah (13a) says The Rishonim debate where the 36 crowns came from (see Rashi, Tosfos Shantz, Maharsha.)  However, why does the Gemorah emphasis that there were 36 crowns, why do we need to know the number? And what is the significance that they put their crowns around Yaakov?

Many books on Chanukah point out, there are 36 tractates of the Shas (now we have more than that #, but apparently that was the original #.)  The 36 crowns came to challenge the 36 lights of the Shas.  They were the "crowns of the dark side" that came to challenge the light of Yaakov, the light of Torah.  These crowns are the קליפות that feel there power isn't subject to the will of God.  That is the source of the 36 כריתות.  A person does an action that is such a complete rebellion against God that disconnects his/er soul from its power source.  (See Keren Orah on Sotah.)  When they hung their crowns on the bed of Yaakov is represented that they acknowledged that ultimately their power came from Hashem.  This was the message of Yaakov in Shema Yisroel.  Even though there are opposing forces, ultimately even they will realize ה אחד (see וענפיה ערזי אל.)

Circle Or Line

The Kedushat Levi comments on the agalos that Yosef sent to Yaakov that Yosef was hinting to Yaakov not to be afraid of the golus. Obviously, this is Kabbalistic jargon (everyone's favorite,) from the teachings of the Arizal about אור ישר and עגולים but it can be explained in simple terminology as well.

The circle is the the natural events of the world.  The world rotates and we go through the ups and downs of life seemingly leaving G-d out of the picture.  As the Sfas Emes Chanukah (5661) puts it: It appeared that Hashem was abandoning Yaakov to the downward spiral of the circle as he was forced into golus.  Yosef was informing Yaakov that the downward spiral is just a means to the end. Even though as going down the spiral things seem to be spinning out of control, its just the opposite.  There is a need to go down in order to be able to bring out a greater good.  As the Sfas Emes continues, We recognize that the revolvement of the world is controlled by Hashem.

The Rishonim ask why it says אנכי ה אלקיך אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים and not אשר בראתי את העולם?  According to the Sfas Emes it is the Exodus that shows us it is Hashem that is controlling the ups and downs in life.  אלקיך גי' גלגל, because the Exodus proved that the golus is necessary for the greater good, to reach Mattan Torah.

That is why the Gemorah Taanis (31a) says that the tzaddikim will form a circle.  For we will recognize that the revolving of the world is controlled by Hashem (see Shiveley Pinchas 5774.)

Garments Of Exile

Yosef gives the brothers garments.  Why, did they come without clothes? He gives Binyomin 5 garments and the Gemorah  says he was hinting to the 5 garments of royalty that Mordechai would wear at the conclusion of the Megillah story.  Why does Yosef hint to this event right now in Egypt?  And why is it 5 garments, true Mrdechai wore 5 garments, but The stories of Berashis aren't just stories that were one time events but they are part of building the world.  When Yaakov and Co. descend into Egypt it is is the paradigm of every future golus.  The golus of Egypt is a map as to how to navigate through all the future exiles.

The Midrash Rabbah (91:10) says How could Yaakov complain to Hashem, he is Mr. Emunah?  This was the beginning of the descent into he golus.  Golus isn't a destination,  its a state of mind.  Yaakov's clarity at this moment become fogged up and hence he couldn't understand the hahgachas Hashem.

The brothers were just coming off being tricked by clothes.  The garb of Yosef concealed his true identity.  Yosef gave the brothers clothes so that they wouldn't be confused by God's clothes.  the לבוש concealing Hashem in the golus shouldn't fool the brothers into think that they are being abandoned.  Just as Hashem helped Yosef in his foreign clothes, so too Hashem would be helping behind the scenes survive the golus.  That is why Yosef alluded at this time to Mordechai for the holiday of הסתר פנים is Purim.  The prime episode of Hashem guiding us from behind the garments of golus is during the Purim story (see Likutay Emunas Etecha Purim and Sfas Emes 5657.)

There are 5 terminologies of גאולה corresponding to the 5 cups drunken on Pesach.  Wait, there only 4?  No, there are 5, the fifth (והבאתי) is connected with the ultimate גאולה so therefore we don't drink that cup, we put it aside.  There are four exiles that we go through and the fifth step is גאולה.  That is why Yosef gave 5 garments to Binyamin for he wanted to hint that there will be a גאולה from the גלות.

Eating Terumah

The possuk in parshas Titzaveh (39:33) says This is one of the sources that its a positive commandment to eat kodshim.  The Rambam in perush hamishna to Ohalot (18:4) says It appears that eating terumah is also a mitzvah.  The Rambam in Sefer Hamitzvot positive commandment #89 counts the mitzvah of eating kodshim. In the middle he discusses that this also includes eating terumah and eating kodshim kalim. It is unclear exactly what does the Rambam mean, however, we see it is part of the mitzvah of eating kodshim.  However, there there is a difference between eating teruma and kodshim.  Regarding kodshim, the mitzvah is separate from the avodah of the korban.  Eating kodshim kalim and terumah however is part of the avodah of the korban/ separating the terumah. (See also perush hamishna Gittin 1:5.)  This view of the Rambam is followed is his Mishne Torah in the last halacha of the Laws of Terumot where he rules that a kohan says a blessing of mitzvot before eating terumah, (See Radvaz that understands one says a blessing even though its not a mitzvah, וצ"ע.)

A Krias Shema
